I have been super blessed from my reading of Matthew 2 today. Unfortunately, we can’t share all the lessons with you (15+ lessons). We hope to share two or three with you today and we hope to learn from your lessons also.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”Matthew 2:1-2

Now if the wise men came from the East; that means they traveled to the West, Yes? So today’s journey to the West is not about Shifo, Badjie, and the Monkey King. It’s about some lessons from the Wise men and we pray you’ll be blessed by this 3 mins read.

#1. Wise men travel with their kind (v1)

You are the company of the people you keep. Proverbs 13:20, “He who walks [as a companion] with wise men will be wise, But the companions of [conceited, dull-witted] fools [are fools themselves and] will experience harm.”

  • Apostle Selman said, “If you are walking with four foolish friends, you didn’t count right…” Mercy!
  • If you’re walking with four gossips, you didn’t count right.
  • If you’re walking with four blessed people, you didn’t count right! Because you will be blessed also.
  • If you’re walking with four wise people, you didn’t count right! You will be the fifth wise person!
Psalm 1:1-6
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous:” You see, the way of the righteous is one way. It is not two different ways. When you find someone who knows God or has had an encounter with God, you can know. How? Because God says the same things…

God won’t say to somebody, “Honour your father and mother…” and say to another “rebel or dishonour your father or mother…” or to the other ” You can actually slap your father or mother…” Noo!!! Nooo!!!

It is the same thing; so when you find people who know God for themselves, they’re the same or similar. Why? They’re all walking with the same God.

Anyway, the question for us today is this: What company do you keep? And can we travel with you to meet Jesus? Or will you complain on the way and murmur about many different things? (eg. Read about Israel and the mixed multitudes in Numbers 11).

#2. Wise men ask questions (v.2)

Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
  • Wise people ask great questions. This ability to ask questions often leads to great accomplishments.
  • One of the notable achievements is the rebuilding of the city walls of Jerusalem in 52 days.
  • It began with a question (Read Nehemiah 1:1-4); and where there are questions, there are solutions.
  • A Chinese proverb says: “He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who doesn’t ask is a fool forever”. Which do you choose to be?

Exhibit A: David’s rise to prominence began with a question (Read 1 Samuel 17:26-30)

David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

Exhibit B: Solomon’s prayer for wisdom ended with a question (Read 1 Kings 3:6-9)

Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David,... 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?

Exhibit C: Jesus asked questions from experts (Read Luke 2:46-47). This is the only story we find in Jesus’ formative years and it speaks about His love for God’s house, His choice of company and His ability to ask questions!

"After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers."
  • Ask who am I? why am I here?
  • Where am I coming from? Where am I going? How do I get there?
  • Why am I struggling with this? Why does he/she behave this way?
  • Why am I not growing in my gift (eg music/talent)? Am I investing in myself?

Ask from others: Who do you say I am? Why do you think this is happening? What can I do to improve in this area? How did you achieve this?

When we ask questions, the Holy Spirit can now teach us, and also bring people in to give us answers.
