G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) ~ Dcns. Denise

  • The acronym G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time), is a slang used to describe an outstanding performance or achievement in a specific group of persons.
  • One very popular argument that stands out in recent times has been which of these two excellent footballers, Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo, is the real G.O.A.T.?

In Mark 9:33 Jesus quietly observes the disciples argue among themselves about who would be the Greatest of All. In answering them Jesus makes a very interesting statement (v35):

“What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest.
35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”

In the accounts of Matthew (18:4) and Luke (9:48), Jesus likens the greatest to one who exemplifies the humility of a child.

Jesus’ answer to the disciples represents one of many Kingdom principles that is opposite to the natural patterns of this world.

  • In the world you become first or attain greatness by preferring yourself above others, and pushing your way to the top, no matter who or what is affected.
  • The world today is characterized by a sickening trend of young people eager to reach the top but immune to serve and humble themselves under authority until the day of honour is ripe.
  • Jesus our perfect example, while on earth showed great humility and service for the ultimate benefit of the Kingdom.

Jesus, knowing He was God did not at any time use His authority as an advantage over others, but He served all of mankind and was humble even to the point of death on the cross. What level of selflessness!

In the Kingdom, as we journey to the top we place others above ourselves, fostering a peaceful co-existence devoid of strife and conflicts that arise from worldly competition (Mark 10:43-44; Luke 22:26; Matthew 23:11).

The reason is simple, we are on an ultimate mission to populate the Kingdom of God and must die to self so that the Lord shall be exalted in all aspects of our life.

As Christians, we must consistently be conscious of our identity and be careful not to conform to the dictates of this world (Romans 12:2). Especially in the body of Christ, let us desist from actions that defeat the ultimate purpose of expanding the Kingdom, such as:

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
  • manipulating to be placed in a position of authority; shifting the focus of the church to yourself as a leader;
  • unhealthy competition between church workers for the endorsement of members; being embittered by the failure of authorities to recognize our contributions, etc.
  • All these break the unity of the church and shift us from the main goal of expanding the Kingdom.
  • Jesus after fighting the good fight was crowned the ultimate G.O.A.T (Philippians 2:9-11).

Because of His humility and service on earth, God has exalted Him to the highest place and given Him a name that is above every name, that at the mention of the name Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord. Praise God!

Thou good and faithful SERVANT, the service is ultimately unto God for the expansion of the Kingdom. If you ever desire to be great in your time on earth and the life after, SERVE!
