“For you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.” – Philippians 1:5 (NLT)
- The book of Philippians is a heartfelt letter from Apostle Paul, written from prison in Rome, to the church at Philippi.
- Unlike some of Paul’s other letters, this one was not written to correct doctrinal errors or rebuke wrongdoing.
- Rather, it was written as an expression of deep gratitude and love.
The Philippian church had supported Paul both spiritually and materially during his missionary journeys and, even in his imprisonment, sent him a gift through Epaphroditus to sustain him (Philippians 4:18-19).

Paul acknowledges their faithfulness and calls them “partners in spreading the Good News about Christ.” This statement reveals something profound about God’s work on earth, and God accomplishes His mission through people who partner with Him and with one another.
The Philippian church may not have travelled as Paul did, but through their prayers, encouragement, and support, they became co-labourers in the work of the gospel.
“For you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.” - Philippians 1:5 (NLT)
- This verse highlights a key responsibility of every believer: to take his or her place as an active partner in advancing the gospel.
- Partnership in the gospel is not reserved for preachers, missionaries, or pastors alone.
- It involves every believer who has received Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal saviour.

The Mandate
Jesus Himself gave this mandate in Matthew 28:19–20, a passage known as The Great Commission:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
- This command is clear: every believer is called to be part of God’s global mission of making disciples.
- Evangelism is not just an event or a program; it is the heartbeat of the Christian faith.
- When we received the gift of eternal life through salvation, we also received the responsibility to share that same message with others.

The Ministry of Reconciliation:
In 2 Corinthians 5:17–18, the Bible says:
“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.”
- Every believer has been entrusted with this ministry, the responsibility of reconciling the world to God through the gospel of grace.
- Whether through preaching, personal witnessing, lifestyle evangelism, mission work, or supporting those in the field, each of us has a role to play.
This means that spreading the gospel is not optional for a believer; it is part of our identity in Christ. Just as Paul saw the Philippian church as co-workers, God sees us as fellow labourers in His vineyard.
Ways We Can Partner in Spreading the Gospel
While evangelism, missions, and personal witnessing are direct ways of spreading the gospel, Scripture shows us additional ways we can partner in the great commission, through prayer and giving.

1. Partnership through Prayer:
- Prayer is one of the key ways to participate in the spread of the gospel.
- Not everyone may stand on a crusade platform, travel to remote mission fields, or preach to crowds, but everyone can pray.
- When we pray, we actively join hands with God in shaping the destinies of people and nations.
Here are some key areas we can pray into:
- Open doors for the gospel: Pray that opportunities will be created for the message of Jesus to reach more people (Colossians 4:3; 1 Corinthians 16:9).
- Utterance for ministers: Pray that preachers of the gospel will speak with boldness, clarity, and grace (Ephesians 6:19).
- Receptive hearts: Pray that the hearts of those who hear the gospel will be open to receive and believe (2 Corinthians 4:3–4).
"And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." - 2 Corinthians 4:3–4.
- More labourers: Pray that more believers will rise to serve in the harvest field (Matthew 9:37–38).
- Provision of resources: Pray for the release of resources – human, financial, and material – to support the work of missions and evangelism (Zechariah 1:17; Deuteronomy 8:17–18).

Through prayer, we partner with God in spiritual warfare, pulling down barriers and preparing hearts to encounter the gospel. As James 5:16 says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
2. Partnership through Giving
- Giving is another way to partner in spreading the gospel. It is an expression of love, faith, and obedience to God.
- It goes beyond finances and material resources; it begins with surrendering ourselves fully to the Lord.
- In 2 Corinthians 8:5, Paul speaks of the Macedonian believers:
“They even did more than we had hoped, for their first action was to give themselves to the Lord and to us, just as God wanted them to do.”
- When we truly give ourselves to God, our resources follow. Financial and material giving play a vital role in advancing the gospel.
- Ministries, missions, outreaches, church plants, Bible printing, media broadcasts, and humanitarian efforts are often sustained through the generosity of God’s people.

Givings in the scriptures:
- The Israelites who willingly gave to build the tabernacle (Exodus 35:21).
- King David and the people of Israel gave joyfully for the building of the temple (1 Chronicles 29:9).
"and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved them came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for all its service, and for the sacred garments." - Exodus 35:21
"The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly." -1 Chronicles 29:9
- The Philippian church supported Paul’s missionary journeys (Philippians 4:15–17).
- The early church’s generous support for one another (Acts 20:35; Acts 13:16).
- When we give, we share in the harvest of souls that our giving makes possible.
Paul said to the Philippians, “Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.” (Philippians 4:17).

The Beauty and Reward of Partnership
Partnering in the spread of the gospel is both a privilege and a responsibility. God doesn’t need us to accomplish His purposes, but He has chosen to work through us. This partnership brings eternal rewards.
Every soul reached, every life transformed, and every community changed through the gospel becomes part of our heavenly account.
Moreover, gospel partnership builds a strong, mission-focused church. Just as the Philippian church remained close to Paul in prayer, love, and generosity, churches today can grow stronger and more vibrant by actively supporting the work of evangelism and missions.

A Call to Action
- These are some of the ways you can partner in fulfilling the Great Commission. Don’t wait for tomorrow; you can start today.
- Begin with prayer. Look for ways to give. Support a mission. Share the gospel with someone around you.
- (You can support your church community and also AWG Devotional in all these areas).
Remember Jesus’ words in Matthew 9:37–38: “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few.”
- The world is waiting to hear the message of Jesus, and God is counting on us to take our place in His great mission.
- Let us, like the Philippian church, be faithful and consistent partners in spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth.
- This is our calling, our privilege, and our eternal investment. – Minister James Deke
