  • Maybe you missed Galatians, Ephesians, and Philippians, Colossians but hey, join in and let’s “tattoo” God’s Word in our hearts! 📖🤍
  • God bless you, and looking forward to your lessons, insights, and comments.

The Christian journey across the centuries has not been so different from one generation to another. The wise King Solomon once said, “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.” (‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭1:9‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

  • In other words, civilization is caught in a cycle of repetition. Our experiences may take new forms, but at their core, they remain deeply familiar. The struggles, victories, and faith of believers before us often mirror our own.
  • This truth makes the story of the early Church an invaluable guide for our time. And today, we’ll be gleaning lessons from the Thessalonian believers.

“You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results. We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition. For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Here’s a quick background to the Apostle’s epistle to Thessalonica:

  • In the first century, Thessalonica was Macedonia’s leading commercial hub, thanks to its strategic harbor.
  • Paul founded the church there, composed mainly of Gentile converts. However, persecution soon arose from jealous Jews, forcing him to flee.
  • Despite his departure, Paul’s anxiety for the young church was eased when Timothy brought back encouraging news from Corinth, that the believers were standing firm in faith.

In the first chapter, Paul commended the Thessalonians
(1 Thessalonians 1:3) for:

  • Their work produced by faith,
  • Their labor promoted by love,
  • Their endurance is inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

However, the progress of the Thessalonian Church began because men like Paul and Silas dared to preach the gospel to them in the face of strong opposition. Here’s a snippet of the kind of opposition the Thessalonican Church faced;

“But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here, and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.””
‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:5-7‬ ‭NIV‬‬
  • Opposition is part of the call. Our call to declare Christ will always pit us against the world. Jesus Himself said, “…the world hates you.” (John‬ ‭15:19‬ ‭NIV)
  • The Gospel carries the power to save, but it often stirs commotion before it brings transformation. In moments of opposition, we are not called to retreat or silence our voices, but to stand firm and speak boldly, just as Paul, Silas, and Jason did.
  • For the believer, opposition is not a reason to withdraw, but a divine invitation to persevere with courage.

Interestingly, while Thessalonica initially resisted the Gospel, the Bereans received it eagerly and examined the Scriptures daily:

“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:11-12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Yet later, when Paul writes this epistle, as a response to the report of Timothy, we find that the Thessalonians too had come to embrace the Word wholeheartedly:

“And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭2:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬
  • As believers, we are stewards of the Gospel, called to proclaim it not from impure motives, but from hearts devoted to revealing Jesus and glorifying Him.
  • When this pattern is followed, our message becomes God’s approved echo to the nations, one that saves and transforms lives.
  • We must also learn, like the Thessalonians, to receive God’s Word through His vessels as divine truth, not mere human speech. To examine it daily, like the Bereans, and to live it out in faith.

Dear brothers and sisters, our world today desperately needs the Gospel. In the face of opposition, may we remain steadfast, fighting the good fight of truth like Paul and his companions. Pick up your sword, the Word of God, and keep declaring Christ!
