Power of Money

Have you ever heard of the saying “What money can’t do, more money can do”? Thinking about this critically, aside salvation and eternal life, there is probably nothing money can’t achieve for you.

Ecclesiastes 10:19 puts it this way; “money answers all things”.

  • The principle of the earth has been set to make money a medium of exchange for goods and services, and living without it or too little can be very distressing.
  • Money is a force and connotes power; the ability to get anything you desire when you desire is a powerful feeling.

Unfortunately, out of the abundance of money, some have reached a point where they no longer see the need for God because it becomes a mini god – which can do anything at will.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” ~ Matthew 6:24

  • Money is an important piece to accomplishing anything great in this life, even in ministry and service to God.
  • However, since it is a force or spirit (Matt 6:24) with the potential to rule over you, we must be guided by the Word to manage money well and break free from its bondage.

Take Dominion

First Timothy 6 provides us with some principles to be able to take dominion over money and the insatiable needs of man. Dear rich uncle and rich auntie, may the Lord open your heart to receive these truths for a better life:

1. Pray for the Spirit of Contentment

Contentment is a feeling of satisfaction with what you have and where you are, without a restless desire for more. Contentment here refers to the inner peace that comes from the knowledge that true gain isn’t measured in money but in living a life that honors God.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. ~ 1 Tim 6:6
  • When you are content, your confidence rests in God, and you experience a richness that money can’t buy, knowing that your situation is not permanent.
  • Note however, that contentment is not a ticket for laziness (Prov 6:10-11).
  • You must be diligent in all your ways and take every necessary step while you enjoy your rest in God.
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to restand poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man (Prov 6:10-11).

2. Naked you came, Naked you shall go:

Acknowledging this truth is one of the powerful ways to avoid the control of money. Paul warns us against the love of money and urges believers to be content.

For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. ~ 1 Tim 6:7

  • Life itself is fleeting, and the material wealth you are restless to lay hold of is temporary.
  • Our possessions are only ours for a brief time; we come into the world empty‑handed and leave the same way.
  • Living in this reality will keep you from greed and help you to focus on the weightier matters—faith, love, and Godly living (Prov 27:1, James 4:14, Matthew 6:34, Luke 12:20).
"Don't boast about tomorrow, for you don't know what a day may bring" ~ Proverbs 27:1
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. ~ James 4:14

3. Always answer the why

What really is your motivation to be rich? The right motivation usually has a direct relationship with the means of getting rich.

Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. ~ 1 Tim 6:9-10

A mere love for money will always lead one into all kinds of evil, but a true heart that seeks to honour the Lord with their wealth will always consider carefully the means to riches and seek to please the Lord.

4. Be Rich in Good Deeds:

True riches is the one that seeks the welfare of others. Be generous and abound in good works. Do not idolize your riches, knowing that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” ~ 1 Tim 6:18-19

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” ~ Luke 6:38
  • There are many others in the world whose destinies are tied to yours. As believers, God blesses us so we can bless others.
  • Everything we are blessed with is not ours only, but for the benefit of the body of Christ (Luke 6:38, Prov 22:9, Acts 20:35, Mat 6:21, 2 Cor 9:7).
"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor." ~ Prov 22:9
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." ~ 2 Cor 9:6-7

5. Understand your Source:

God gives us the power to make wealth. Increase always comes from the Lord and not of our own power per se.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. ~ 1 Tim 6:17

While it is important that you remain diligent in your human efforts, you must always acknowledge God as the ultimate source and ask Him for wisdom, ideas, and strategies for a bountiful harvest.

But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. ~ Deut 8:18

  1. Money makes a good servant but a terrible master. It’s not wrong to make money or even to be rich, but it is wrong to be greedy, covetous and miserly with our wealth. It’s wrong to horde wealth and not to be generous with it.
