The Boy Jesus

4 min read
  • Today we share with you on the only story we have about the formative years of Jesus (I wish there were others on the miracles He did as a boy lol).
  • However, from the story of His birth till when He began ministry at age 30, this is the only story which can give us some keys for our own preparation for our life purposes.
  • We will share just one of them in 2 mins. Let’s dig in:

Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. ~ Luke 2:46-47

  • In His formative years, Jesus sought after knowledge (v46).
  • The Bible says He stayed in the temple for three whole days; just seeking after knowledge.
  • Dear Christian, seek after knowledge. Knowledge about God and His Word…
  • Knowledge in school (education); knowledge about your talents and gifts; developing relevant skills…
  • Knowledge about relationships; knowledge about developing Godly character; knowledge about ministry, finances, etc.
The Bible says, "For we know in part…" and God said "my people perish because they lack knowledge."
In any area of life we lack knowledge, we are likely to perish - in fact, Bible says we will perish.
You and I don't know much, and we certainly don't know it all.
  • Let’s look for opportunities to learn (this requires effort). If a 12-year-old Jesus stayed in the temple 3 days for this, you can prioritise it also.
  • Look for books to read; buy them! Sit down and listen to teachers (in-person, at conferences, sermons, podcasts, etc.).
  • If there are things you don’t understand, ask questions. “Though it cost all you have, get understanding.”
Four quick points from Jesus’ quest for knowledge:
  • 1. Listening effectively. This is not listening to gossip and anyone who has something to say. This is listening to experts (another version says doctors); either in person or from their recordings and books.
  • 2. Asking questions. Learn to ask questions. Pride stops many of us from asking questions; we cannot grow in wisdom that way. Children easily ask a lot of questions because they are humble.
  • 3. Seeking understanding. This is one of the reasons to ask questions and gain clarification. If you don’t get an understanding in the end, you will have wasted your time. Fruit bearing is from understanding (Matthew 13:23).
  • 4. Be able to share what you have learnt. At a point (I’m guessing on the 3rd day of His classes), Jesus also gave some answers.
  • Develop the art of sharing what you learn; you become what you teach.

The effect of this is that Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men (v52). May this be our portion also. Heyy… you’re blessed and highly favoured and dearly loved!
