When disaster strikes, people are filled with grief and anguish (Consider the devastating natural disasters around the world and the evil deeds of people and nations).
Naturally, we try to find reasons, answers, and some sort of explanations to help make sense of the situation.
Today I want us to consider (in 3 mins), what Jesus says concerning disasters. Let’s dig in:
Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no!But Unless You REPENT, You Too Will All Perish.
Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But Unless You REPENT, You Too Will All Perish.” (Luke 13:1-5)
From the passage above, we get two kinds of disasters:
1. Those caused by wicked rulers/dealings of men;(eg. wars, ‘galamsey’, etc).“Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.”
2. Those caused by natural disasters(floods, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc). “Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them“
Interestingly Jesus didn’t attempt to answer why any of the disasters happened; neither did He play the blame game. Jesus rather dismissed the idea that accidents or human cruelties were God’s judgment on especially bad sinners.
“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?" "Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?"
Whether a person dies in a tragic accident or miraculously survives is not an indicator of his or her righteousness.
The surest prophetic word is that none of us will escape this earth alive. Everyone has to die
Jesus did not explain why some die tragically; instead, He pointed to everyone’s need for repentance.
And what’s more, He clearly states that these disasters can happen to everyone and anyone; believers can die from natural disasters, and evil deaths caused by men could happen to anybody.
But no matter how or when it occurs, death does not need to have the last word. Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will “not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
And so you’ll realize that in both instances, Jesus gives a simple answer: Unless you REPENT, you will likewise perish!! Jesus’ solution to disaster is REPENTANCE!
Listen, no matter how we die(natural death, or from an accident, or an attack), eternity will be waiting for us.
However way death comes, it will surely come for all of us at some time.
And Jesus is saying, “Unless you REPENT, you too will all Perish!”
Beloved, Heaven and Hell are real and unless you REPENT, you are going to perish in hell after death. Today I came with a hashtag that says: #PrayForSalvation.
Dear friend, where will you end up in eternity if you leave Earth today? Have you received Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour? He calls to you today.
You could be in church for a long while or since birth and still perish. Today, you can dedicate or rededicate your life to Jesus.
He (Jesus) also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’
But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.’”
All you have to do is believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus came to die for our sins so that we will not perish but have eternal life. Pray with me:
“Heavenly Father, today I ask Jesus into my life. I believe that you sent Jesus to die for me on the cross of Calvary, to save me from my sins and give me a place in eternity. I confess Jesus as Lord and Savior of my life. Please give me your Holy Spirit to guide me in this new life and help me Lord, to live for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
