Let’s Take A Walk With Jesus

7 min read

In five (5) minutes, we want to share with you what it means to take a walk with Jesus and the importance of such an activity. Let’s dig in:

So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”
Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?” (Luke 24:15-18)

  • Isn’t it interesting that Jesus walked amongst His disciples and He kept them from recognising Him?
  • How exactly their eyes were restrained we don’t know, but we do know Jesus did it on purpose.
  • I believe one reason Jesus did this was to hear from their perspective how they felt about the events surrounding His death and resurrection.

And these two went on and on explaining how they saw Jesus as a Prophet with mighty deeds and word (v19).

  • How they were hoping that He was the Messiah (v21) but the chief priests had conspired and killed Him (v20);
  • And how the women had told them some Ananse stories (fairy tales) that Jesus’ body was not in the tomb and the women had seen a vision of angels telling them that Jesus was alive (v22-24).

The disciples did not believe the women’s report that Jesus was alive. So in their minds, all they had experienced with Jesus (before the cross) did not make sense. Notice they did not even say He was the Son of God, they said Jesus was a prophet and they had hoped that He was the Messiah. Mercy!

  • Dear friend, some things can happen in our lives that can question our valid experiences and our faith. (For these disciples, it was the loss or crucifixion of their precious Jesus).
  • When we go through difficult experiences (eg. the loss of a loved one, job, health, or relationship), grief and disappointment can cloud our entire reasoning.
  • I want us to consider Jesus’ words and His actions after:

Jesus called them foolish… mercy! And here foolish means to be dull, slow to understand and slow to believe all the prophecies. You see, the disciples had experienced the glory and power of Jesus’s ministry and they could not fathom that it also came with suffering and loss. And that shook their faith!

  • Dear friend, we have to believe in ALL of the Gospel – not a part of it. There is glory and power but there is also humility, suffering and loss (v25-26).
  • And so now Jesus began with the books of Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
  • I believe this is why Jesus hid Himself from them: He wanted to reveal Himself to them in the scriptures! “From now on, you will find me in the scriptures!”

After the resurrection, Jesus wanted the disciples to understand that the primary way He would be revealed to them would be through the Word. They had been used to the supernatural and they had not understood the scriptures. The Word is the anchor of our faith!

  • The supernatural is real but so are the scriptures! And it seems God has chosen this to be the primary way.
  • Dear friend, the primary way God has chosen to reveal Himself to us and to reveal His will and promises for our lives, is through the BIBLE!

Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (v44-45).

  • Jesus was saying: “All the time that I had been with you, I was trying to tell you and let you understand that the Scriptures are about Me and they reveal Me.
  • And just as He did for the disciples, may the Lord open our understanding, so that we can comprehend the Scriptures!
  • “The law of Moses and the Prophets and in the Psalms” represent the Old Testament. Jesus was saying that the entire Old Testament points to Him.

This is very important if we want to understand the scriptures; we must read them with Jesus in mind. Spread all over the Old Testament are typologies of Jesus. May the Holy Spirit open our eyes to see these as we read!

  • Jesus opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit still opens our minds when we study the Bible. An open mind understands scripture!
  • Have you ever wondered how to understand a difficult Bible passage?
  • Even before you read surrounding passages, or ask other people, and/or consult reference works, pray that the Holy Spirit will open your mind to understanding.

Let’s pray for the Holy Spirit to give us the needed insights into the Scriptures and how to put God’s Word into action in our lives.

  • After the experience of the supernatural with Jesus, the faith of the disciples was still shaken in the face of loss and adversity and they hid in fear and anxiety.
  • But after the Holy Spirit and the revelation of Jesus through the Scriptures, they were bold witnesses, unshaken men and women who spread the Gospel – even to their deaths!
  • Dear friend, let’s hold fast to the Bible; study it, meditate on it, and live by it. This is our life!

With this said, we want to strongly encourage you to join us as we study the Word from now to the end of the year. It’s a walk with Jesus that will transform your life! Heyy… you’re blessed and higly favoured and dearly loved!
