“Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. ~ 2 Timothy 1:6-7 (KJV)
Many believers today, like Timothy, face seasons where zeal fades and service feels heavy. Paul’s charge to “stir up the gift of God” is therefore timeless, a call to rekindle our spiritual fire when ministry (service) feels overwhelming.
- Apostle Paul’s words to his spiritual son, Timothy, carry both encouragement and urgency: “Stir up the gift of God.”
- The phrase literally means to rekindle, reignite, or fan into flame the gift of God.
- In other words, Timothy was to keep the fire of the Spirit burning brightly in his life and ministry.
- This instruction came at a critical time. Timothy was pastoring the church in Ephesus, a spiritually vibrant church.
- Yet he was in a challenging city and environment, and the weight of ministry was beginning to wear him down.
- Paul, then reminded Timothy to reignite his spiritual passion and rely on the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.
Challenges Timothy faced in the ministry
Like many Christians today, Timothy faced a variety of trials and discouragements. Below are some of the key challenges he encountered:
1. False teachings and doctrinal confusion: Timothy had to confront false teachers who distorted the gospel with myths, endless genealogies, and speculative ideas that produced controversy instead of faith. 1 Timothy 1:3–4
As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. ~ 1 Timothy 1:3–4
2. Leadership and qualification issues: Immature and unqualified individuals had found their way into leadership.
- Timothy had to restore order and ensure that only those with integrity and godly character led the church. 1 Timothy 3:1–13
3. Age and authority challenges: Being relatively young, Timothy’s authority was questioned by older believers.
- Paul encouraged him to lead by example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. 1 Timothy 4:12
Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. ~ 1 Timothy 4:12
4. Materialism and misuse of wealth: Ephesus was a wealthy city, and some believers pursued riches rather than godliness. Timothy had to confront greed and teach contentment. 1 Timothy 6:5–10
5. Doctrinal corruption about the resurrection and the law: Some, like Hymenaeus and Philetus, were spreading false teachings that the resurrection had already occurred, shaking the faith of others. 2 Timothy 2:16–18
6. Persecution and spiritual discouragement: Ministry in Ephesus was spiritually and emotionally draining. The city was dominated by idol worship, especially of Artemis (Acts 19:23–41). Timothy faced strong opposition and needed courage to continue. 2 Timothy 1:7–8
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. ~ 2 Timothy 1:7–8
7. Apostasy and unfaithful ministers: Several leaders and believers abandoned the faith for worldly pleasures. Paul mentioned names like Demas, Hymenaeus, and Alexander.

"holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme." ~ 1 Timothy 1:19–20
8. Personal fatigue and health struggles: Paul’s counsel about Timothy’s frequent illnesses suggests he was physically weak and emotionally drained from the demands of ministry. 1 Timothy 5:23
Though Timothy faced numerous pressures, Paul’s response was not for Timothy to withdraw but to rekindle his spiritual flame. ~ Minister James Deke
