One day, Jacob left his father-in-law, Laban, to go back to his people. Unknown to him, his beloved wife Rachel had stolen her father’s household gods or idols. When Laban realized this, he gathered his forces and pursued Jacob and his family with an intention to harm him. Listen to what he says:
“I have the power to harm you; but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.’ Now you have gone off because you longed to return to your father’s house. But why did you steal my gods?” ~ Genesis 31:29-30 #Bible
Like Laban pursuing Jacob, the enemy can come after you because something of his is in you. When you have something that belongs to the enemy, until you drop it, until you let it go, he’ll keep pursuing you. He’ll always have a reason to. Jesus said, “The prince of this world is coming and he has nothing in me…” When the devil has nothing in you, he’ll have no hold over you. And this is why we have to draw closer to God and refuse to allow anything take His place in our lives.
Just like I shared my story last week, most Christians have idols that have taken over their lives. And just as it happened to me, your phone can be an idol, the pursuit of money can be an idol, series and movies have become idols, etc. But in true transformation, there is a turn from some sort of idol to serve the true and living God. “They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.”~ 1 Thess 1:9.
So most of us are going to church these days but are not being changed because the 2-3 hours we spend in God’s presence is nothing compared to the time we spend with our idols all week. Because you see, whatever small sin you have: a ‘little’ lust, a ‘small’ lying habit, envy, pride, any other ‘small’ sin in you, as you spend most of your time on series/movies, on social media, with your beloved each day, you fuel your idols and your sins. Because you’re sacrificing to them (time, energy, data, money, etc).
And hey, the idols speak! I’ll share some with you some of what they say: “Do whatever you want to do; You don’t need to wait for marriage to have sex; sleep with whomever you ‘love’; It is your life, once it makes you happy, say it, do it and enjoy life, etc…” Consciously or subconsciously, the idols speak volumes and they drown out God’s voice.
But you see, the transformation you and I need comes from the light of God’s presence and the revelation from His Word. Grace makes this transformation possible. It is the Holy Spirit that transforms us by grace as we spend time with Him. Draw closer.
This is my prayer for you, “may the prince of this world have nothing of his in you when he pursues because you’re fully consumed with the Holy Spirit.” Stay blessed and share with others.
