From Proverbs 12, we’ll share briefly on the power of words and on the definition of the word ‘stupid.‘ Let’s start with the power of words.
“Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.” – Proverbs 12:16
When someone annoys or insults us, we naturally want to retaliate. But this solves nothing and only encourages trouble. Instead, we are being taught to stay calm and answer slowly and quietly.
Your ability to overlook an insult and give a positive response will achieve positive results. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer deflects anger.”
“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace.” – Proverbs 12:18-20
The Bible makes us understand that a perfect man does not say anything wrong (James 3:2). From that definition, we can agree with the popular saying: “No human being is perfect.” The book of Proverbs reveals to us the powerful effects of the words we speak or fail to speak.
Dear friend, no age is exempted from the need to guard our words in our daily relationships.
- Young children call each other names.
- School-aged youth learn undesirable words.
- Teens abuse each other with sharp words.
- Adults spread untruths, and the list goes on.
Let us speak words that bring healing, words of truth, words that promote peace. Pause a minute and pray now, that your conversation will be truthful, loving, and full of healing.
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.” – Proverbs 12:1
If you don’t want to learn, years of schooling will teach you very little. But if you want to be taught, there is no end to what you can learn.
This includes being willing to accept discipline and correction and to learn from the wisdom of others. People who refuse constructive criticism have a problem with pride. Such people are unlikely to learn very much.
Just on the side: It seems some of the words we mete out to people when we are angry or offended are defined correctly by the Bible. The Bible tells us who a fool is, who a wicked person is, and who a simple person is (check out the gallery above).
Proverbs 12:1b tells us who is considered stupid: “but whoever hates correction is stupid.” So for today’s definition: “a person is stupid when he/she hates correction or discipline”. I am sorry if I am shaking some tables, but this is it.
- How many of us, from this definition, know or can identify some ‘stupid’ people around us?
- And how many of us, can look in the mirror of God’s Word, and recognise instances where we would fit this definition?
- Instances when we were considered as stupid in God’s sight… mercy on me, but I remember some instances when I was stupid.
But not anymore! That’s in the past and wise people add to their learning. So I pray that you and I will not be considered as “stupid” ever again. Rather, we will love discipline and correction.
Remember, “For the Lord disciplines and corrects those whom He loves…” So to be corrected and disciplined, especially in the household of faith, actually means you are dearly loved.
