Today’s Scripture Passage: Proverbs 2
We are on a treasure hunt family. Remember that on this journey of wisdom, we are promised to encounter keys. Keys that are capable “to unlock the treasures of the kingdom.” It is only right that we try to understand what a treasure is.
Jesus speaks about this and says: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” (Matthew 6:21). Hence, we can see that there’s some correlation between the heart of a man and his prized possession of a treasure. To treasure anything, it all begins with the heart and how much value we place on it.
“My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.”

In the first three verses of our treasure hunt today (Proverbs 2), Solomon offers a guideline to make our search more effective and profitable. He lists a few things that can help us place value on what our heart seeks to uncover, the treasure of true wisdom:
- Listen to what I say (Prov 2:1): – We are to start the journey of our hunt, by actively listening to the sayings of Proverbs. Not partial attention or split focus but a very intentional act of listening to what the sayings have to offer.
- Tune your ears to wisdom (Prov 2:2): – This suggests that wisdom is always speaking. But just as we tune our radios to the particular frequency of what we want to hear, we must tune our spirits to pick up what wisdom is saying – whether it sounds familiar or it’s foreign to the status quo. Here, your focus is not on understanding, but on being able to welcome the sign of these treasure nuggets of wisdom.
Wisdom is always speaking! From today, as you go about your day, tune your heart and spirit to hear the voice of wisdom.
- Concentrate on Understanding (Prov 2:2): – After the tuning and listening have occurred, we can now focus on trying to understand what we have heard. Understanding means to go deeper into something and bear fruits (Matt 13:23). You cannot make use of the wisdom you have found unless, through much attention and focus, you understand the treasure of knowledge and bear fruit.
- Cry out for Insight / Ask for Understanding (Prov 2:3): – To cry out denotes desperation. Are you desperate to be wise? And who do we cry out to? Right here, we must understand that these kingdom treasures can only be unravelled by a kingdom messenger, and his name is the “Holy Spirit.”
Through prayer and meditation, release a cry of insight and plead for understanding from the Spirit of truth.
- Search for them as you would silver: – Finally, a man in search of silver and treasure, doesn’t stop his hunt until he has completed his journey. Keep moving forward; keep searching for wisdom; keep searching in different books; every treasure is like a silver coin serving as a trail and leading you to greater treasures.
