Today’s Scripture Passage: Proverbs 8
“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be.” ~ Proverbs 8:22-23.
Over and over again the book of Proverbs attempts to give us a clearer picture of wisdom; how valuable it is (eg. Proverbs 1:8-9), the numerous benefits we attain by embracing wisdom (eg. Proverbs 3:13-18), and even the high cost of ignoring wise counsel (eg. Proverbs 7). In Proverbs 8, wisdom is described in various intersting ways.
- Wisdom is described as a person who is crying out to people to come to her (Prov 8:1).
- Wisdom is described to be everywhere (as if onmipresent): At the top of the high hill, beside the way, at the gates, entrace of cities, entrance of doors, etc. (Prov 8: 2-3)
- Wisdom speaks excellent things, right things and truth (Prov 8:6-7).I believe most of us wonder whether an idea we have is a wise idea or not. This is how wisdom sounds when she speaks:
1. Excellent things: Wisdom calls us to what is high and above. Wisdom constantly challenges us to excel. When you think you are the best, wisdom will tell you to be better than your best. Wisdom calls us to new heights. Any voice that gives us all manner of excuses to do the least or settle for the easiest way out is not the voice of wisdom.
2. Right things – Wisdom calls us to what is straight and orderly. Wisdom will not call us to disorder and chaos. Wisdom will tell us to live our lives better according to God’s standards (Prov 8:20).
- Wisdom will tell us to conduct our relationships by choosing God’s way instead of our own.
- Wisdom will tell us to redeem our time and do things when they need to be done. Wisdom will tell us to honour people and treat them with respect.
- Doing what is right has never been easy. God’s call of wisdom to us usually means that we go in the opposite direction of our comfort and wishes.
3. Truth – Wisdom calls us to what is true, firm and trustworthy. Wisdom stands on solid ground and is firmly rooted. Wisdom is not shallow. It builds on a firm foundation.
- Wisdom is not deceptive. It seeks honesty in our relationships.
- Wisdom speaks the truth. Wisdom tells us to follow a path that is tried and true.
- Wisdom will ask us to move away from shortcuts and short fixes to do enduring things.
“For whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favor from the Lord; But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.” – Prov 8:35-36
By the time we get to Proverbs 8:22, it appears that wisdom takes the form of a personality: a person who was with the Father in the beginning as a master craftsman (v30):
“Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him.” – Proverbs 8:30
Interestingly, Apostle John in the New Testament also states that “In the beginning was the word and word was with God and the Word was God … and there was nothing that was made without him” (John 1:1-4).
Could it then be that both Solomon and John were prophetically referring to the same person? The person of wisdom; Jesus Christ, who was with the Father right from the beginning of creation.
Thus, we can safely say that Jesus Christ is wisdom Personified. Jesus is calling for all to come to Him (Matt 11:28, John 7:37-38); Jesus is onmipresent (Matt 28:20); Jesus is the way, truth and life (John 14:6). While He was on Earth, He was said to be filled with wisdom (Luke 2:40).
This is why it is impossible to really follow Jesus and not become wise. Wisdom is your portion in Christ! Jesus is both the power and the wisdom of God! (1 Cor 1:22-24). The Bible says that Jesus Christ has become for us the wisdom from God (1 Cor 1:30).
“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption—” ~ 1 Corinthians 1:30.
We challenge you today to get acquainted with Jesus and His Word! You will have the power and wisdom of God in your life!
“… and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise… All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim 3:15-17).

Today, we offer you an opportunity to know the man of wisdom: Jesus Christ. If you are not born again or you want to re-dedicate your life to God, I want you to know that decision is the best thing that can ever happen to you. All you need to do is to believe in your heart and pray this prayer with me in faith:
“Jesus, You died upon the cross and rose again to save the lost. Forgive me now of all my sins. Come be my Savior, my Lord, and my Friend. Change my life and make it new and help me, Lord, to live for You.
Today, I choose to respond to your great love; thank you for loving me. Please give me your Spirit, fill me with wisdom, that I may live a life that pleases you, Amen!”
Congratulations!! There is great rejoicing in heaven because of you. You are a new creation, you have your ticket to everlasting life, and you have started your journey of true wisdom because of this choice!
