Anxiety III: Freedom and Fear

5 min read
  • Yesterday, we saw that abundant good things are stored up for those who walk in the fear of God (which is the beginning of the wisdom of God).
  • We saw that the wisdom of God has to be taught and that the Holy Spirit only teaches people who fear Him (have deep reverence for Him). Let’s continue:

But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty ~ (2 Corinthians 3:15-17)

  • In the verses above we get to understand how the Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom that comes from the fear of the Lord.
  • Paul explains that when most people read the Bible (Moses or the Old Testament), there is a veil or or a covering that keeps them from understanding the wisdom of God.
  • Then He says, but when one turns to the Lord (who is the Holy Spirit), He takes the veil away and there is liberty (or there is freedom) to understand God’s Word and God’s wisdom.
  • So unlike it is used most times, this verse does not mean there is liberty so we should shout and scream, etc.
  • It means that where the Holy Spirit is, there is liberty (or freedom) to understand God’s word and His wisdom!
  • Because whatever was a veil, or was blocking you from understanding is taken away. Dear friend, this is why we need the fear of God in our lives (no more veil and the Holy Spirit will teach us).

In fact, one thing we need in every place is the fear of God. It needs to be present in our hearts, homes, marriage, offices, and country. It’s a good quality which must pervade who we are and everything we do. About Jesus it was said:

What makes the fear of the Lord so important? Because fear acts as a control or a restraint. Fear is a powerful emotion that influences our decisions and actions, but it can be used negatively or positively.

  • For example, one reason we study to pass examinations is the fear of failure. That fear motivates you to study; otherwise, we would just do other things (or it’s just me? lol)
  • Or imagine you were standing on the balcony of a very tall building (at the edge), and you are informed that you had inherited a million dollars (don’t forget AWG in your paradise lol).
  • Though you may want to run and scream, the fear of falling will limit the extent to which you can celebrate. That fear will likely influence you to make the right decision to leave that place first.
"And Abraham said, because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake." (Genesis 20:11)

When Abraham arrived in Canaan, he realized the fear of God was not present in that country.
He didn’t want to stay because the people who lived there were not governed by the fear of God and could make very wicked decisions including murder (they will slay me for my wife’s sake).

  • It is dangerous to be in a relationship without the fear of God. People who don’t fear God can be mean and wicked.
  • When you work for people who don’t fear God, they can easily manipulate and exploit you.
  • And when you and I don’t have the fear of God in our hearts, we can make wrong decisions that will keep us from the abundant future in store for us.
Remember Psalm 31:19 which says, "How ABUNDANT are the GOOD THINGS that you have stored up for THOSE WHO FEAR YOU, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you."
  • Let’s allow the fear of God to pervade our lives and watch how these abundant good things will be bestowed on us.
  • (We’ll continue tomorrow from our main text…). Heyy… you’re blessed and highly favored and dearly loved!
